Transition to school

An integral component of the 4 year old kindergarten program is preparation for Foundation (Prep) at Whitehorse Primary School. This commences early in the year and involves sessions with the Grade 5 buddies, familiarisation with the school environment and involvement in certain school activities such as cross country, movie night, and school disco.

Kindergarten Teacher’s perspective

Throughout the year the kindergarten children build up a sense of belonging to the wider Whitehorse Primary School community through sharing the school’s facilities and taking part in school community events. Our formal Transition Program begins in Term 2, it involves the preschool children meeting the Grade 5 children who will be their Grade 6 Buddies. The kindergarten children also get to meet the Foundation teachers and become familiar with the Foundation environment. The close connection with Whitehorse Primary School provides a unique opportunity for our kindergarten children to have a smooth transition into school!

Foundation (Prep) Teacher's perspective

As Foundation teachers, we interact with 3 and 4 year old kindergarten children on a frequent basis, both formally and informally.  We know that children who commence Foundation (prep) from our own Seedlings Kindergarten almost universally have a transition that is comfortable, happy and successful.  All Seedlings children have the opportunity to really get to know each Seedlings child prior to their formal school beginning!

- Marion (Foundation Teacher)

Parent’s perspective

I felt completely at ease about my daughter starting Prep at Whitehorse Primary School after attending Seedlings Kindergarten.  She was confident in her surrounds and accompanied by friends she had made during her two years at kinder.  It was a wonderful, stress-free way to be introduced into the school arena.

- Juliette (mum of 4 year old kinder child)
