About Our School

Whitehorse Primary School is a co-educational school that caters for children from Prep to Grade 6. Our attractive campus is located in a quiet residential part of Blackburn North. We have a diverse student population and a warm, friendly and caring community.

We are a school committed to a culture of teaching and learning excellence. We are very proud of our strong academic program and a rich curriculum that develops the whole child and promotes real-world learning.  Our class structure allows for a highly flexible, developmental approach to classroom learning. Catering to individual learning needs and interests prepares our children for living, working and succeeding in an increasingly globalised, digital world.

The cornerstones of Literacy and Numeracy are given strong emphasis in our daily timetable.  Children learn other foundation subjects - such as Science, Humanities, Health and Technology - through a holistic, inquiry-based approach. These Integrated Studies allow us to respond to the needs, ideas and interests of the children.  Specialist teachers also provide dedicated weekly sessions in Visual Art, Chinese, Science  and Physical Education.  Incursions, excursions and camps complement classroom learning. Technology is incorporated throughout our curriculum, with iPads providing engaging, personalised learning opportunities.

Special features of our school include:

  • Recently built facilities, designed by award-winning, international architects

Our History

Whitehorse Primary School is a member of the University of Melbourne Network of Schools Alumni and recently completed a highly successful School Review which showcased a number of outstanding achievements.

Although Whitehorse Primary School is a young school, it is privileged to have a heritage that dates back more than 90 years. Its founding schools both had long and proud histories: Nunawading Primary School opened in Springvale Road in 1922 (originally as Tunstall State School) and Springview Primary School opened in Junction Road in 1964. Many thousands of students attended the former schools and both are still held with affection in the hearts of the local and wider communities.

House System

The school is divided into 4 'houses' and each child is allocated to a house upon enrolment.  The houses compete in inter-house athletics and the school cross country. House captains are elected at the beginning of each year.

The school houses are named after significant historical and contemporary Australians: Fiona Wood, Edward "Weary" Dunlop, Edith Cowan and Fred Hollows.

Each house has its own colour.
